When was the last time you exerted yourself, really pushed yourself to a different limit?

Whether it is to boost your fitness levels, for health or just simply for fun cycling is a great way to get your heart rate up. With fresh air hitting your face as you cycle along Mumbai’s coastal belt of South Mumbai, cycling in the open air is a great way to start a Sunday, don’t you think?

On 20th December 2015, RentSetGo had organised a bicycle ride from Chowpatty to Nariman point, a total of 12 kms along with Kalyan cyclist who led the ride and Global Leading Holistic Health Guru, Mickey Mehta wellness experts who helped to gear us up for the ride (with a warm up and cool down session before the ride.)

Cycling is often an exercise, which we tend to ignore, associating with our childhood. After all, when we are adults the gym is always the best option that most of us opt for.

So what’s really in store for us if we cycle on the road; after all this type of cycling has got to be different from the stationary cycle that we have in the gym?

  • Cycling helps to build up our stamina levels: Stamina is basically our body’s ability to endure long periods of exercise. Cycling helps to build up our stamina levels, especially when ride sessions are long!
  • Cycling helps to strengthen and even increase muscle tone: Although many people underestimate cycling as an activity, holding beliefs that it only helps tone the lower body muscles, the truth is quite the opposite! In fact, cycling works on strengthening in a very holistic manner every part of the body (as they all are involved). Cycling in fact helps to improve the muscle in the legs, thighs, hips and even rear end!
  • Cycling eats up CALORIES: Did you know that cycling on a consistent basis could help you to burn FAT? Not only does it helps to boost your metabolic rate (long after you have finished your ride) but can help you on your weight loss mission!
  • Cycling improves our cardio-vascular fitness levels: When you cycle your heart rate is bound to shoot up and most of the time this ‘heart pound’ would be at a steady level. By making use of the largest muscle group in our body (the legs) cycling also raises our heart rates, which also benefits our stamina and fitness!
  • Cycling improves coordination and reduces stress: An activity, which is known to focus solely on, the legs, cycling actually helps in the coordination of other body parts as well.   These include arm-to-leg, body-to-eye and feet-to-hands.

Cycling is known to be a great stress-reliever as well where it’s easy to take one’s mind out of everyday life hurdles and rejuvenate our souls.

So what was it like to be apart of El Ciclo Fiesta?

While the meeting time was 7 AM sharp we met at Mickey Mehta’s 360 Wellness Temple (Studio) at Babulnath where we did our warm up exercises and selected our bicycles for the ride.

The tough part (this was REALLY TOUGH) was pushing myself and I’m sure for everyone else to get out of bed and show up on time! I made sure I had set my alarm and even asked some friends to call me and give me wake up calls! I had invited a few of my blogger friends as well Aziz Ampanwala, Monish Chandan and Apoorva Arya who also joined in. So I knew I wouldn’t exactly be a newbie there!

However, after waking up I was totally charged up for this cycling event, in fact very excited since I don’t exactly cycle outdoors and thought this would be an excellent form of exercise!

Equipped with helmets and cycles, we started our cycling ride with enthusiasm and happiness!

While some started off slow, there were others who went ahead with speed; but the fact of the matter was that it was a wonderful feeling to know that we were cycling along South Mumbai’s coastal belt, early in the morning on a Sunday when we would otherwise be sleeping at home!

Our journey towards NCPA apartments, which marked the midpoint of our cycling event, was also a place where we actually took a short break and played an Icebreaker game to get to know each other.

We were given a few minutes to talk to a person about a funny incident that happened in their childhood, which embarrassed them. After which, we had to introduce the other person to the group.

This was the only time when we all had a chance to interact with other people. With embarrassing and even shocking incidents to hear from one another, we all were in splits by the end of the event! Of course two winners were selected who were given a prize.

After this short game, we started our journey back to Babulnath and ended our event with some cool-down exercises. Of course there were some enthusiastic riders who challenged themselves to take a second round back to NCPA apartments and back!
